Balance in teaching – an academic perspective – Would teaching digital skills risk losing core structural engineering concepts from a teaching programme?

Abstract

This presentation focuses on the role of academia and especially education in engineering. Our current economy is characterized by intense and rapid digitalisation, where new digital approaches challenge traditional engineering. Approaching digital skills as a separate subject in engineering education, can create silos in collaborative work, hence there is a need to embed digital skills into core structural engineering concepts in a teaching programme. Through inductive teaching approaches such as project-based learning approaches and case methods, student can practice and learn how to learn and continuously challenge their skills and develop themselves in a rapidly changing environment.
