Digital innovation in construction - Crossing boundaries to lead and collaborate

Abstract

Construction undergoes a massive transformation through the influence of digital economy on all its aspects. In our technology-laden world many digital solutions promise to provide quick and off-the-shelf answers to persistent problems such as low productivity, efficiency and poor quality. At the same time, digital transformation is not constant because digital technologies, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud-computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Blockchain, continuously evolve and become more integrated.

To this end, to collaborate using these innovations, work practices first become hybrid before fully becoming digitally transformed. During this hybrid phase, organisations, teams and individuals cross various boundaries and develop new roles to lead and perform collaborative work. The interfaces between digital technologies, projects, organisations and individuals become obscure and managing them is critical for success. How can we lead these new digital-savvy teams and develop our people to excel in digital economy.
